The Body Shop Malaysia receives Prime Minister’s CSR Award
On 8th March, 2010, which was also International Women’s Day, The Body Shop team had every reason to be truly proud of their CSR efforts after bagging an award at the prestigious Prime Minister’s CSR Awards ceremony recently.
The Prestigious Prime Minister’s CSR Award
The company which is well known for its long term commitment towards campaigning for positive social and environment change won the CSR Award in the category of Empowerment of Women. The award was personally presented by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak, together with Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil to Datin Mina Cheah-Foong, Managing Director of Rampai-Niaga Sdn. Bhd., the sole franchisee of The Body Shop West Malaysia. The Body Shop in West Malaysia has since 2000 campaigned actively with Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) to Stop Violence Against Women. In 2008, a major campaign was launched at all The Body Shop stores in West Malaysia focusing on the often hushed up issue of domestic violence, titled Break Up the Silence on Domestic Violence: Talk to a Friend. Educational materials was distributed in-store containing information on domestic violence statistics, signs on a person experiencing domestic violence, how to help, understanding why and how domestic violence occurs, how the Domestic Violence Act can help and what a survivor can do among others. A dedicated campaign station was also set up at all stores to promote and sell a limited edition Shea Lip Care Duo, of which RM35,924 was raised from the proceeds and went towards the setting up of a WAO shelter where victims of domestic violence can stay and receive counseling. Further on, in 2009, The Body Shop launched a campaign on Stop Sex Trafficking of Children and Young People.
The prestigious Prime Minister’s CSR Awards, launched by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development in 2007, aims to recognise companies that have made a difference to the communities in which they operate through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes. The Prime Minister’s CSR Awards is the nation’s highest recognition of corporate organisations that have had a significant and positive impact on the lives of people around them. CSR programmes considered for the Awards should therefore demonstrate the company’s commitment to, and respect for, communities and their environment. Shortlisted candidates are rated according to the following criteria. The positive impact the CSR initiative has on the communities at which it is targeted. The sustainability of the project; and The level of commitment and involvement displayed by the companies in these projects. |
