Feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin feels pretty good, right? And there are loads of benefits from spending time in the sunshine. Expect Vitamin D, which is great for your bones, and serotonin, which helps to boost your mood. The trouble is, the sun’s UV rays are also powerful enough to damage our skin and cause sunburn. So to reap the benefits of sunny days, it’s crucial that we protect our skin first.
1. HELP PROTECT YOUR SKIN WITH SPF
Always apply sunscreen to your face and wear a hat and sunglasses for extra sun protection. Our 100% vegan Drops of Light™ Skin Defence duo provides lightweight protection for bold, busy lifestyles. It works on-the-go and with make-up, so you can embrace those everyday adventures. Apply Skin Defence Multi-Protection Essence SPF50 PA++++ and top up on-the-go with Skin Defence Multi-Protection Face Mist SPF45 PA++. Both are enriched with Community Trade marula oil from Namibia, red algae extract from the North Atlantic and vitamin C, and help skin appear brighter and more luminous.
Sightseeing in the city? Walking along the seafront? Minimise damage from UVA/UVB rays by always wearing a hat and sunnies in addition to high-protection sunscreen to maximise UVA/UVB protection for your face. Luckily this timeless combo looks pretty cool, too.
3. AVOID DIRECT SUN AT MIDDAY
The sun is strongest between the hours of 10am and 2pm, so it’s best to avoid direct sunlight at this time. The strength of the sun’s rays can also increase if you’re surrounded by water or snow due the reflective surfaces.
4. SAY NO TO SUNBEDS
Research suggests that tanning beds are closely linked with skin cancer, so it’s best to avoid them at all costs. Create your own sun-kissed glow by sticking to tinted moisturisers to pamper your skin while creating a natural-looking tan at any time of the year.
"SPF 60 BLOCKS TWICE AS MANY UV RAYS AS SPF 30"
Wrong! Products with a high SPF can give false confidence. Your level of protection won't double by doubling your SPF. Choose a higher SPF for better protection, but remember, it's much more effective to reapply throughout the day, no matter which SPF you choose.
"I DON'T BURN SO MY SKIN WON'T GET DAMAGED IN THE SUN"
Wrong again! Just because your skin doesn't burn doesn't mean it's immune to sun damage. Exposure to UVA rays can cause premature skin ageing, as well as deep unseen damage that can increase the risk of skin cancer later in life.
"I'VE ALREADY GOT A TAN SO I WON'T BURN"
Most definitely wrong! Your suntan gives really minor protection from the sun and is a tell tale sign that your skin has already been damaged. Use sun protection no matter how tanned you are!
"ALL YOU NEED TO LOOK FOR IS SPF"
You've guessed it… this is also a total myth. SPF only protects your skin from UVB rays, when it's important to also protect against UVA. Always look for products that protect against both!
"IF I WEAR A HAT I DON'T NEED SUNCREAM ON MY FACE"
Yep, it's a myth. Even when you're wearing a sunhat that shades your face, it's still crucial that you also apply sunscreen. Indirect radiation is still a risk, particularly when you're wearing a hat the sun without any other shade.
